Day 0: Arrival in Negombo
Your journey begins at our coastal basecamp where you will be introduced to your private motorhome. After a briefing on the vehicle's features, spend the day exploring the Negombo lagoon or relaxing in the lounge of your rig. In the evening, enjoy a fresh seafood dinner on the beach, marking the start of your 1,300km expedition.
Day 1: Negombo to Kalpitiya
Head north along the coastal belt to the wind-swept Kalpitiya Peninsula. You'll board a boat for a thrilling morning dolphin-watching encounter before returning to your mobile base for lunch. Spend the afternoon exploring the bird-rich lagoons and park your motorhome right on the shoreline for a night of off-grid camping under the coastal stars.
Day 2: Kalpitiya to Mannar
Experience a rugged drive through the buffer zones of Wilpattu National Park, keeping a lookout for elephants and leopards from the high-vantage windows of the van. After a ferry crossing to Mannar Island, you will explore the historic Dutch Fort and ancient temples. The day ends with a "tailgate sunset" over the Kalkudah Bridge before settling into a quiet island campsite.
Day 3: Mannar to Jaffna
Travel into the vibrant north, where the motorhome allows you to immerse yourself in the unique Tamil culture. Visit the massive Jaffna Fort and the golden Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil temple. Your driver will then navigate to the historic Jaffna Public Library, giving you a mobile retreat to relax in between exploring the city's rich intellectual and colonial history.
Day 4: Jaffna to Delft Island
Journey to the edge of the map as you board a ferry to the rugged and remote Delft Island. Spend the day exploring its unique coral-walled lanes, ancient ruins, and vast plains where wild horses — descended from Dutch breeds — roam free. After uncovering the island's colonial history and stark natural beauty, return to the comfort of your motorhome on the mainland for a quiet evening and a meal prepared in your private kitchen.
Day 5: Jaffna to Trincomalee
Embark on a scenic cross-country drive to the eastern port of Trincomalee. Ascend to the Koneswaram Temple perched on a cliffside, then take a boat to Pigeon Island for world-class snorkeling. The motorhome provides a perfect changing room and refreshment station as you transition from the ocean back to the road.
Day 6: Trincomalee Exploration
Spend a full day in this historic harbor city. Start with a sunrise whale-watching safari to spot blue whales, then explore the ramparts of Fort Frederick. With no hotel check-out times to worry about, you can enjoy a leisurely afternoon watching the colorful fishing boats in the inner harbor before a beachside BBQ at your campsite.
Day 7: Trincomalee to Arugam Bay
Follow the coastline south to the world-famous surf mecca of Arugam Bay. Whether you are hitting the waves or watching from the shade of the van's awning, the atmosphere is perfectly laid-back. The evening is yours to enjoy the "surf-chic" lifestyle of the town, with the comfort of your own bed parked just steps from the break.
Day 8: Arugam Bay to Yala National Park
Transition from the coast to the deep wild. After a scenic drive, you will board a 4x4 jeep for a safari through Yala National Park to track leopards and sloth bears. Your motorhome will be waiting at the park boundary, providing a luxury "bush camp" experience with all the amenities of home in the heart of the wilderness.
Day 9: Yala to Mirissa
Continue along the southern arc toward the charming bay of Mirissa. The drive offers stunning vistas of the Indian Ocean, and the van's elevated seating provides the best views of the passing landscapes. Upon arrival, relax on the golden sands or enjoy the vibrant beachfront cafe culture that makes this town a traveler favorite.
Day 10: Mirissa Rest Day
Today the engine stays off. Use your motorhome as a private beach hut; brew your own coffee, nap in the AC, or head out for a final whale-watching excursion. It is a day of total relaxation and reflection on the journey across the island.
Day 11: Mirissa to Colombo
Cruise the southern expressway and coastal roads toward the capital city, stopping to see the iconic stilt fishermen along the way. In Colombo, visit the eclectic Gangaramaya Temple and end the day at Galle Face Green. Join the locals for street food as the sun sets over the ocean, enjoying the final metropolitan buzz of the tour.
Day 12: Colombo to Negombo
The final leg is a relaxed drive back to Negombo, avoiding the city rush. Visit the Dutch Canal for a quiet afternoon before a farewell seafood feast. With the airport just minutes away, you can enjoy a stress-free final evening in your motorhome before your departure, concluding an epic 12-day overland circuit.
